Mercenaries of Fantasy, a collection of the best short stories from last year's award of the same name (formerly The Iron Glove of Lord Trollslayer), is a must for fans of Czech fantasy and those interested in what goes on in the shadows of its biggest stars. But if you want to get the full experience of this delicacy, you should also reach for the dessert - the book "Cadets of Fantasy", which contains the stories from the 11th to the 15th place. Indeed, these are nothing to be ashamed of and make an interesting and enjoyable addition to the main collection.
I submitted a story to the competition, Eldarinn, not knowing that it would end up in this collection. The story came eleventh in the competition, just outside the top ten. The publisher surprised everyone with an extra edition of short stories. Eldarinn is a tribute to an interactive form of storytelling (evil tongues call it gaming) that no one since Chris Avellon at BIS has been able to fully recreate. In retrospect, I rate the story as a 1980s B-movie - with forgiveness to the era of my life that gave birth to it.
